SSC GD Constable Salary 2026: Pay, Allowances and Job Profile

Read in: Englishहिंदीਪੰਜਾਬੀ

Before committing months to preparation, it is worth knowing exactly what the job pays and what it actually involves. Both are more concrete than most candidates realise.

Pay structure

SSC GD Constable is a Pay Level 3 post under the 7th Pay Commission, with a basic pay band of ₹21,700 to ₹69,100.

That range is not what you earn in year one and year twenty of the same role — it is the level’s full span, which you move up through annual increments and promotion.

What actually lands in your account

Basic pay is only part of it. On top come Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance and, depending on where you are posted, ration money and hardship or field allowances.

In practice, in-hand salary generally falls somewhere around ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 per month, and the spread within that is mostly about posting. HRA differs by city classification, and field or high-altitude postings carry allowances that a metro posting does not.

Deductions — NPS contribution, insurance, and so on — apply before that figure reaches you. Treat any single number you see quoted online with suspicion, including this one: the honest answer is that it depends heavily on where you are posted.

Which force you join

SSC GD recruits for several organisations at once:

You give preferences, but allocation depends on your rank, category and vacancies. The forces differ a great deal in posting conditions: CISF guards installations such as airports and plants and is largely urban, while BSF and ITBP are border forces with remote and high-altitude postings.

If posting conditions matter to you, research the individual forces before filling in your preference order. It is one of the few choices in this process you actually control.

The job itself

General Duty constable work is what the name says: guard duty, patrolling, checkpoints, crowd and law-and-order deployment, convoy protection, and internal security operations depending on the force.

It involves shift work, extended postings away from home, and physical demands that continue long after selection. This is worth being clear-eyed about — the salary is stable and the benefits are real, but the working conditions are not comparable to a desk job at the same pay level.

Benefits beyond salary

For many candidates these are worth as much as the headline pay, particularly medical cover and accommodation.

Promotion

Progression typically runs Constable → Head Constable → Assistant Sub-Inspector → Sub-Inspector, through a combination of departmental examinations and seniority. Timelines vary by force and by how actively you pursue departmental exams.

What decides whether you get in

Your rank comes entirely from the written CBT. The physical test is qualifying — pass or fail, adding nothing to your merit position. So the 60 minutes of the written paper are what determine which force you join and whether you are selected at all.

Salary figures, allowances and vacancy numbers change between cycles. Check the official SSC notification and the relevant force’s own information for the year you are applying in.
